Winter is when the books, the records and the machinery get the attention they cannot get in season. This checklist covers the dates that fall in the cold months and shortly after, a records review, equipment servicing, and setting up weather alerts before spring.
Dates to put on the calendar
Based on CRA and AAFC pages checked on 2 October 2026:
- December 31: the single instalment date CRA allows for farming and fishing income, if net tax owing exceeded $3,000 in each of the last three years ($1,800 in Québec)
- April 30: AgriStability enrolment and fee deadline, unless your Enrolment Notice says otherwise. Late participation is possible only when governments agree and normally reduces benefits by 20%
- April 30: balance owing for self-employed income, including farming. June 15 is the filing deadline for self-employed individuals. These are CRA's dates for the 2025 tax year, so check for the 2026 year in spring
Provincial crop insurance deadlines vary by province and crop, so confirm yours with your insurer.
Review the year's records
Winter is when gaps show. Reconcile farm by farm: acreage, crops grown, inputs applied and the decisions behind them, while you still remember them. Clean records make the tax return, the AgriStability application and next year's plan faster, and they are what an accountant or adviser will ask for first.
Equipment maintenance
Tasks that are easier in a heated shop than in April:
- Fluid changes and system flushes
- Battery maintenance in cold conditions
- Tire pressure and storage protocols
- Hydraulic system servicing
- GPS and precision ag technology updates
Follow each manufacturer's maintenance schedule, and keep the service records with your farm records.
Look at the numbers
Review profit and loss by enterprise, the balance sheet and planned capital purchases. Capital cost allowance rules and first-year deductions have changed repeatedly and some measures are only proposed, so talk to your accountant before timing a purchase around year-end. Our farm tax guide explains the main rules, and our AgriStability guide covers the program dates.
Set up weather alerts before spring
Frost, heat and wind alerts only help if the farm is set up before the season starts. In AgriIntel, add each farm with its location and coordinates, check that alert emails are switched on in Settings, and confirm the address is one you read in April and May. AgriIntel forecasts for each farm's coordinates and checks every three hours. It is a planning aid and does not replace official Environment Canada alerts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What farm deadlines fall in winter?
The main one is CRA's December 31 instalment for farming income, if you meet the conditions. Heading into spring, April 30 matters for AgriStability enrolment and for any balance owing. Insurance deadlines vary by province.
When is the AgriStability deadline?
Enrolment and the fee are due April 30 of each program year, unless your Enrolment Notice says otherwise. Confirm with your provincial administrator, because forms and special measures have their own deadlines.
When do self-employed farmers have to file their tax return?
Self-employed individuals, including farmers, have until June 15 to file, but any balance owing is due April 30. Those were the dates for the 2025 tax year, so check CRA for the 2026 year.
